French top-flight club Rennes have reportedly made contact with Chelsea over a possible move for defender Fikayo Tomori.

According to L’Equipe, the Ligue 1 outfit are interested in the English defender and his performances at Stamford Bridge have caught their eye.

The report explains that they have reached out to the Blues about the 22-year-old and talks are now underway, but it’s not stated whether they want to pursue a permanent or a loan transfer.

Rennes will be playing Champions League football next season after a surprise third-placed finish in the French league last season and they are now looking to improve their squad.

Despite being linked with a host of centre-backs already this season, Tomori is not a name that has been mentioned as a possible departure and it would be a surprise to see him go through the exit doors.

The academy graduate is someone that worked under manager Frank Lampard during a loan with Derby, before being drafted into the Chelsea first-team this season and making 22 senior appearances across all competitions.

He is a centre-back that is blessed with rapid speed and he’s already earned a senior international cap for England too.

L’Equipe’s claims about Tomori are vague in itself so Chelsea fans should take them with a pinch of salt, but the player’s absence since the restart is one that has surprised some and is perhaps an indicator on his future.

Tomori was injured at the beginning of the restart and has since been stuck on the bench for the previous five games, despite Chelsea’s obvious struggles in the heart of defence.

The Blues shouldn’t even entertain the idea of selling Tomori on a permanent basis due to the fact he’s got the potential to be a nailed-on starter at Stamford Bridge as he develops, but perhaps a year on loan with top-four club Rennes could be a good move for his career.
