Reported Chelsea transfer target Jadon Sancho will make his transfer decision based on Champions League football, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
The Sancho transfer saga has not cooled down despite the financial mess caused by the global crisis.
The 20-year-old is arguably Europe’s hottest property at the moment having had 14 goals and 15 assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances this season.
And a number of top clubs are reportedly ready to splash around £120million for the Borussia Dortmund’s ace, including Chelsea.
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has previously expressed his desire to keep Sancho. But he also admitted he would be open to selling if Sancho has made up his mind on his preferred summer destination.
And according to the Athletic’s Ornstein, Sancho wants to join a club who will be playing Champions League football.
He said in a live Q&A session: “Sancho grew up supporting Chelsea and they are an option for him — but that doesn’t mean he’s going there. Same Champions League issue as (Manchester) United applies for them.
“Sancho and Dortmund can it tight for a bit, see how things develop and go for there.
“I wouldn’t rule Chelsea out but I don’t think they are in pole position as things stand – I don’t think any club is.”
And as things stand in the Premier League table, Chelsea who occupy the fourth place have had the bigger chance to qualify for the Champions League next season, having a three-point cushion over fifth-placed Manchester United.
The team who finish fifth at the end of the season could still qualify for Champions League, but that would depend on how Manchester City’s two-year ban from UEFA competitions goes.
