Chelsea have been reported to be in the running for an extraordinary reunion with Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, if he departs Anfield.

According to The Athletic, the financial implications involved in a deal to bring the forward in means the Blues are one of the only teams capable of securing the signing.

Salah left Chelsea in 2016, scoring just two goals for the club in as many years, following a couple of loan spells to Italy.

The Blues will surely have been kicking themselves every time the Egyptian found the net last season, with him blossoming in to one of the best players in the world away from Stamford Bridge.

The 30-year-old scored 23 and assisted 14 in 35 league games last season, as Liverpool threatened to break history by winning the quadruple.

His form in recent seasons has seen him become one of the most prolific players in the world, with pundit Gary Neville describing him as ‘world-class’.

Despite the stellar season, it appears Jurgen Klopp’s men are heading into a new era, after the sale of Sadio Mane and signing of striker Darwin Nunez.

Salah has just one year left on his contract at Anfield, and it appears his demands have made it difficult for Liverpool to extend his deal. This could potentially put some of the top clubs on alert, with The Athletic suggesting that Chelsea are firmly in that category.

They claim this is because the financial implications of the Egypt international’s wages create a market very few clubs can compete in, leaving Chelsea a good chance at a reunion.

Chelsea appear to be looking to bring in Raheem Sterling from Manchester City this summer, showing a willingness to deal with their top six rivals.

And they apparently could repeat that trick again next year when Salah’s contract expires, with the Egyptian’s team talking up the possibility of the winger staying in the Premier League, even if he leaves Liverpool.

While Salah’s form cooled off towards the end of the season, his numbers as top scorer and top assister should have nothing taken away from them.

That being said, he obviously functions at his best due to the fantastic system and players around him, which is different to how Chelsea currently operate.

It’s also likely he will cite prior failings in West London has a reason to look elsewhere if he chooses to move on next summer.
