Report: Tottenham now want to sign £10m star, after claims Chelsea were ready to bid for him

Tottenham have reportedly set their sights on Lens defender Jonathan Clauss, who’s been linked already this summer with Chelsea.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs have come up with alternative full-back targets in case they fail to sign Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence.

The report claims that Lens right wing-back Clauss is someone Antonio Conte’s Spurs are interested in.

This comes after plenty of speculation that Chelsea were ready to bid for the 29-year-old.

It’s been reported that the Blues have been given the green light to press ahead and to try sign Clauss, with Lens already signing their potential replacement. Apparently, Chelsea could now try wrap up a £10million deal after initial contact was made.

Tottenham set sights on Chelsea target Jonathan Clauss

It looks like Chelsea face fresh competition in their summer chase.

Clauss, who’s been included in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season for two consecutive years, looks a bargain at £10million.

He’s a right wing-back that is dangerous going forward, scoring five goals and making 11 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions last season for Lens.

The four-time capped France international is a player on the rise fully deserving of a big transfer.

His specialist role as a wing-back means he could slot seamlessly into either the Chelsea or Spurs XI, with both preferring to play a system with three centre-backs and wing-backs.

In fairness, you’d have to say the chances of Clauss going straight into a starting line-up next season looks much more likely at Spurs than at Stamford Bridge. The difficulty convincing a right wing-back to join the Blues is selling to them they’re likely to play understudy to Reece James.
