Report: Tuchel already knows two signings he wants Boehly to make when he becomes Chelsea's new owner
Thomas Tuchel reportedly wants additional cover for his Chelsea wing-backs.
According to the Evening Standard, the Blues boss will ask Todd Boehly to help fund the hunt for reinforcements in this area of the field.
Tuchel will not want another situation next season like the one he dealt with during January.
Chelsea suffered significantly
Throughout the winter window, Chelsea were on the hunt for new wing-backs, thanks to the simultaneous absences of Ben Chilwell and Reece James.
Chilwell’s campaign ended prematurely in November after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury against Juventus.
A few months later, 22-year-old James pulled up with a hamstring problem just before the turn of 2022.
Heading into the New Year, Tuchel’s only recognised senior wing-backs were Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.
As much as the Spanish pair are tried, tested and trusted, their attacking output struggled to match James and Chilwell’s.
Alonso and Azpilicueta both started all but one of the five games without James, including the encounters with Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Premier League title challenge pretty much finished in those two fixtures.
Liverpool drew 2-2 at Stamford Bridge despite leading 2-0, before Manchester City won 1-0 on home soil.
Would the results be different had Chelsea’s English defensive duo been available? Very possibly.
Tuchel wants cover at wing-back
During this period, the chain of command scoured the market for the cavalry, eventually falling upon too rather familiar faces.
They attempted to recall Emerson Palmieri early from his loan spell with Lyon, yet the French side did not budge.
Instead, the Blues brought Kenedy back to the fold, having originally sent him away to Flamengo.
Kenedy has since played just 71 minutes of football, with Tuchel largely relying on Azpilicueta and Alonso until James returned properly last month.
But with the two Spaniards apparently heading for the exit door, the manager might need the hierarchy to dig even deeper into the wing-back treasure chest this summer.
Especially as Chilwell only reconvened for training with the senior squad yesterday, meaning the £50m (Sky Sports) man’s recovery still has some way to go.
Best begin your transfer search now, Mr. Boehly.
