Report: Tuchel 'extremely' keen for Chelsea player to stay, but PL rivals are making strong push to sign him
Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is reportedly being targeted by Premier League and London rivals Tottenham.
According to Eurosport, Spurs are putting forward a “strong proposal” in their attempts to sign him.
It is understood that Blues manager Thomas Tuchel is “extremely” keen on keeping Rudiger at Stamford Bridge beyond his current contract, which is due to expire at the end of the season.
The report explains that it’s “almost certain” the 28-year-old leaves Chelsea, though.
There has been constant speculation about Rudiger’s future in the past few months and there’s still no news on any kind of contract extension. Incidentally, Paul Merson recently claimed he’s convinced that the defender will leave.
Rudiger at Spurs would crush Chelsea fanbase
For starters, Rudiger has been one of the world’s elite centre-halves during 2021. It’s fair to predict he should have his pick of several elite clubs if he becomes a free agent next summer, so Spurs need to improve significantly under Antonio Conte’s guidance to get back in the Champions League.
Rudiger is one of the few players that excites Chelsea supporters every game.
The aggressive centre-back is firm and decisive with his defending. Also, he loves to come out from the back with brave dribbles and contributions going up the pitch.
Chelsea’s switch to a back-three system has helped get the very best out of Rudiger this year, so losing him from the starting line-up would be a significant blow. It would be even worse if he joins a rival in Spurs, though.
It’s alarming that the latest report suggests he’s heading for the exit doors, but Blues fans will keep their fingers crossed for now.
