Newly-appointed Barcelona manager Xavi is reportedly keen on trying to sign a senior Chelsea player.

ESPN reports Spanish giants Barcelona are monitoring the situation of Chelsea’s club captain Cesar Azpilicueta, whose contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer.

It is understood that the Premier League leaders are in talks with the 32-year-old about him extending his deal in London, but there is still no agreement.

Xavi, who was appointed Barcelona manager earlier in November, is reportedly “especially keen” on signing Azpiliceuta if he becomes a free agent next summer.

Chelsea must keep Azpilicueta

For Chelsea, Azpilicueta continues to be one of the club’s unsung heroes.

The versatile Spanish defender has now made an impressive 442 appearances for the Blues and has cemented a legacy for himself.

However, it shouldn’t be over yet.

He’s such a vital player to manager Thomas Tuchel because of the way he shines as either a centre-back, full-back or wing-back.

Chelsea need to ensure their leader is tied down to a new deal, as trying to replace someone like him would take at least a couple of signings.

Azpiliceuta has previously explained he’s always ready to adapt to new roles in formation. Also, Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku spoke earlier in the season about his relationship on the pitch with him.

Youngsters leaning on experience

There is clearly a lot of young talent at Stamford Bridge with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic.

For them, they are definitely going to be picking the brains of senior teammates such as Azpilicuta and Thiago Silva in the dressing room.

Tuchel needs to try keep that perfect balance in his group.
