Rob Green has given a positive verdict on Chelsea’s reported target Issa Diop.
The 23-year-old West Ham defender has been in the Premier League for 18 months now and has built his reputation as a promising star.
The Daily Express have reported that the Blues are planning a potential £40million swoop for the West Ham enforcer this month, with Tottenham also placing him on their radar.
The centre-back has been left on the bench for the opening two games of David Moyes’ second spell in charge as West Ham manager, including on Friday night against Sheffield United in the Premier League fixture.
Former goalkeeper Green, who was at West Ham and Chelsea in his playing career, has spoken abut the quality of Frenchman Diop.
But he’s unsure on if the Blues need to go out to sign another centre-back during the January window.
“A big tall centre-half with pace, good on the ball. Who wouldn’t be interested if you’ve got those sorts of credentials,” Green told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.
“Chelsea, where’s there priorities? Are they looking for another centre-half, they’ve already got three good young centre-halves do they need another one?”
Chelsea do already have Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen as options in the heart of defence.
Blues manager Frank Lampard has ruled out Christensen leaving in January (Football.London) despite him being fourth in the centre-back pecking order.
There is no doubt that Diop is an athletic defender with plenty of potential, but it seems a little overcrowded right now in the backline at Stamford Bridge and it would be an odd signing.
