Chelsea are reportedly contemplating making a ‘big’ signing in midfield before the transfer window shuts.

According to journalist Dean Jones, the Blues have not ruled out an attempt of bringing in a new midfielder this summer.

With just over one week left in the window, Thomas Tuchel’s side will need to move soon to strengthen in the centre of the park.

Jones names West Ham’s Declan Rice and Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong as two midfielders that have been in Chelsea’s sights, and the club are looking to see if a ‘big transfer’ can be made in a key position of the pitch.

Transfer insider Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Chelsea have really been looking at their midfield and are still contemplating a big transfer in that area. Declan Rice and Frenkie de Jong are a couple of the players they have looked at and now they are studying which players might be on the table as we head into the last week of the window.”

Chelsea contemplating midfield signing

Most supporters will agree that signing a new centre-back and a new striker during the next week should be Chelsea’s priority.

However, the midfield position has become a problem area in the opening weeks of the Premier League season.

Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante, who both have a recent history of injury problems, have missed games already this campaign due to problems. For certain, they’ve exposed a position on the pitch that previously looked so strong.

The fact that Jorginho, Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek can also play in midfield means the Blues do have options. There’s a big drop off when injury prone duo Kovacic and Kante are absent, though.

De Jong or Rice

Both De Jong and Rice have received links to Stamford Bridge this summer, but there’s been no strong rumours recently of a potential move materialising.

West Ham and England star Rice is reportedly someone that may be sold next year amid interest from the likes of Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s De Jong would reportedly prefer to join Chelsea if he ends up in the Premier League this summer, but he would rather stay put at the Camp Nou.
