'Still pushing': Romano gives percentage chance of Rudiger staying at Chelsea
Chelsea reportedly have a 50 per cent change of keeping Antonio Rudiger beyond the summer.
With Rudiger’s contract at Stamford Bridge expiring at the end of the season, there is constant speculation about his future.
According to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano on his podcast, it’s 50-50 as to whether or not the German defender stays and signs a new deal.
It is understood that there are still ongoing discussions between the club and player, but his future hangs in the balance.
“We can say that for Rudiger the situation is still open. It’s true that Chelsea are still pushing to extend his contract, but at the same point nothing has been agreed yet. I keep the situation open for Rudiger. It’s like 50-50 for Rudiger to stay or leave the club,” Romano said.
Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola recently said the club need to keep Rudiger.
The 28-year-old’s one of the few mainstays in Thomas Tuchel’s starting line-up, so losing him would be a huge blow to the squad.
He’s an all-action centre-back whose game has developed tenfold under Tuchel, and many now view him as one of the best defenders across Europe.
Horrible wait for Chelsea fans
There is no doubting Rudiger is one of the fan favourites around the Bridge. He’s urged forward on ambitious dribbles whenever he gets the ball on the halfway line, plus he’s loved for his no-nonsense aggressive tackling.
However, in the back of everyone’s mind is whether or not he’s in the final few months of his Chelsea career.
It seems a no-brainer for everyone in the fanbase to say the Germany international must be given a new improved contract.
However, discussions appear to have been going on some while without any solution in sight.
There’s a lot of nail-biting going on waiting to hear the outcome.
