Journalist Dean Jones has claimed there are some at Chelsea who are confused as to why they haven’t yet made any efforts to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.

He told GiveMeSport that there is an obvious divide between those close to the club over who should occupy the striker position for the coming seasons.

Supporters sitting in The Shed end of the ground will be all too familiar with Watkins, after he latched on to a Marc Cucurella error to give his side the lead at Stamford Bridge last season.

The goal sent them on their way to a 2-0 win in what proved to be Graham Potter’s final game in charge of the club.

His personal season was actually very impressive, especially after Unai Emery took the reins as manager.

He ended with 15 goals in the Premier League, with only five players notching up more than him throughout the campaign.

Chelsea sources want Watkins

Not long after his England debut, he was praised by manager at the time Dean Smith, describing him as ‘outstanding’.

The Blues meanwhile saw none of their squad reach double digits in the league. Only Mason Mount has achieved this feat once in the last three seasons.

There is a glaring issue at Stamford Bridge with the lack of a regular goalscorer. Supporters are praying for no more seasons with the likes of Kai Havertz leading the line.

Jones has now claimed there are some close to the club who can’t see a better option than Watkins available on the market.

He said: “I know people close to Chelsea who believe that it’s strange that they aren’t looking down the path of trying to sign Ollie Watkins.”

The Blues are set to announce the addition of Nicolas Jackson this week from Villarreal, however it is expected that they are not finished this summer in terms of bringing in attackers.
