Chelsea are closing in on making two major attacking signings that will bring serious competition to their ranks for the upcoming season.

The Blues are set to announce Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro as brand new additions at Stamford Bridge, with big money being spent on the first team squad.

Chelsea have been chasing Gittens throughout the summer, and despite the fact they were unable to sign him before the Club World Cup they weren’t deterred.

The Blues also caught Newcastle off guard to sign Pedro from Brighton, with the Brazilian making the decision to move to Stamford Bridge.

With Maresca such a big fan of Pedro, it is clear that Todd Boehly and co are beginning to take the manager’s recommendations into account when it comes to new players.

The Italian has earnt this right with his excellent first season in charge of the club, bringing the club back to the Champions League after two years outside of the competition.

This could also provide an indicator as to what they are going to do for the rest of this summer. Simon Phillips has claimed that the manager is keen to add a new goalkeeper and centre-back to their ranks before the window shuts.

He said: “Chelsea still trying for Kudus as well, and Maresca’s other wants are a new GK and a CB. Antonio Silva was scouted again last night and has been on the shortlist for some time. Chelsea rejected a chance to go for Jhon Duran this week too.”

Antonio Silva impresses against Chelsea

It was reported after the Blues’ Club World Cup Round of 16 win that chiefs of the club had been keeping tabs on Antonio Silva’s performance against them.

The 21-year-old was colossal at the back up against Chelsea, stopping a certain goal from Marc Cucurella with a dramatic clearance off the line.

The Blues were already keen on a new defender this summer, however that interest may be accelerated by the fact that it looks like they have been hit by a big injury problem.
