Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea are hoping for Levi Colwill to sign a new contract once Kalidou Koulibaly leaves Stamford Bridge.

The Senegal international has been in west London for less than six months following a £33m move from Napoli in July 2022 – however, he could already be departing.

So, what is the latest on Kalidou Koulibaly and Levi Colwill at Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, Romano believes Koulibaly has a three-year contract on the table from Al-Hilal.

Negotiations are set to continue across the next few days after a bid in the region of €30m (£26m) was made.

Now, Romano has provided an update on how Koulibaly’s situation could impact Colwill at Chelsea.

The reliable Italian journalist believes Chelsea are hoping that the 31-year-old’s move to Saudi Arabia will help the England Under-21 international receive the assurances over playing time that he wants.

A story from talkSPORT claimed that Colwill wanted assurances over game time before committing himself to Chelsea, after Brighton saw a £30m bid rejected for the defender who shone on loan for the Seagulls last season.

At the moment, it seems difficult for Pochettino to give the 20-year-old those assurances when the likes of Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Thiago Silva and Trevor Chalobah are already at Stamford Bridge.

However, if Koulibaly does leave, it would certainly be a huge boost for the Blues in terms of keeping Colwill satisfied.

Chelsea must sacrifice Koulibaly for Colwill

In our view, Chelsea must do all they can to seal Koulibaly’s exit.

The Senegalese defender does not represent the future at the age of 31, whereas Colwill could be a mainstay at the heart of Chelsea’s backline for the next decade – he must take priority in this instance.

The Chelsea academy graduate proved he can be one of the Premier League’s best defenders as he helped Brighton finish sixth and qualify for the UEFA Europa League last season.

Now, Colwill will hopefully play a key role next season should Koulibaly secure an exit.
