Those inside Chelsea think they’ve just pulled off a great bit of business

Chelsea have now completed the sale of Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City – on the same day N’Golo Kante also departed Stamford Bridge.

The Croatia international has joined the Citizens in a deal worth £25m – potentially rising to £30m if Manchester City win more trophies with the midfielder in their ranks, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Now – thanks to the Telegraph – the thoughts of those inside Chelsea have been made clear after Mateo Kovacic was sold.

What’s the story?

Well, it is said that Chelsea think the sale of Kovacic is a great bit of business.

The Linz-born midfielder only had 12 months remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge, and given the fact he turns 30 next year, the Blues feel they have done well to negotiate a £30m deal.

Chelsea paid £40m to sign Kovacic from Real Madrid in 2019, so it is certainly shrewd business to receive three quarters of that sum back, while also winning the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with the Croatian playing a key role.

If Chelsea can now reinvest that sum into younger midfield options who improve Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, it would be the icing on the cake.

Kovacic not the only impressive business done by Chelsea

When it comes to selling unwanted players, Chelsea are right up there with the best in Europe at getting decent fees – Kovacic is not the only example.

The Blues are also about to receive £65m for Kai Havertz from Arsenal – according to ESPN.

Chelsea initially spent £71m on the Germany international, and he went on to score the goal which sealed a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League final.

Havertz also scored the winner against Palmeiras to secure the FIFA Club World Cup.

Therefore, Chelsea have done well to get these trophies out of their £71m investment, and only make a £6m loss when things begin to get tough for Havertz, who scored just seven Premier League goals last season.

Be sure to keep an eye on developments at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea could do more solid business with the likes of Christian Pulisic expected to depart.
