Chelsea prospect Ian Maatsen officially left Stamford Bridge on loan today – and some Coventry City fans on Twitter are delighted he’s joined them for the upcoming campaign.
Maatsen 19, will be playing in the Championship during the 2021/22 season with Midlands side Coventry. It was confirmed on Friday he’s joined on a season-long loan.
The teenage defender moved to Chelsea back in 2018 from PSV Eindhoven, initially linking up with the club’s academy. He’s since played one first-team game for the Blues, but is developing his game out on loan at English teams.
The Dutch speedster spent last season as a regular starter in League One for Charlton Athletic, so it’s a step up in levels for him this time around
It looks like Maatsen could be coming in as a left wing-back due to the fact it’s Coventry’s favoured system. This is something that will suit his game because he’s athletic, quick and attack-minded.
Chelsea reputation means clubs queue up for Blues youngsters
A selection of Coventry fans are excited by the Maatsen loan signing, which is a credit to Chelsea’s reputation of bringing through talent.
The left-footer isn’t someone that’s come all the way through the age levels at Conham, something that the likes of Mason Mount and Reece James have done.
However, he was snapped up as a youngster from Holland. It’s clear that he’s an upcoming talent, so a year in the Championship is going to show a lot about where he’s at right now.
Coventry are likely to play an exciting and attacking brand of football.
