‘Unfortunately’: Director admits 24-year-old loanee has gone back to Chelsea, clause won’t be triggered

Malang Sarr has already returned to Chelsea after Paul Mitchell confirmed that Monaco would not be signing the defender on a permanent basis.

The comments were made in an interview with Get French Football News.

So, what was said about Malang Sarr? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, as Mauricio Pochettino attempts to trim his bloated squad this summer, the Argentine would have presumably preferred Monaco to sign the Frenchman permanently.

However, that will not be the case as Sarr has already returned to Stamford Bridge, with an injury preventing him from making progress in France.

Mitchell said: “Malang (Sarr) unfortunately got an injury, a muscular abdominal injury in training a few months ago so he wasn’t available for selection for a long time. Malang has already gone back to Chelsea.”

Pochettino already has Benoit Badiashile, Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Trevor Chalobah and Levi Colwill as part of his centre-back department for next season.

Therefore, it will be tough to find room for Sarr as well after Monaco decided not to trigger their clause to sign him permanently.

The 24-year-old made just eight starts in Ligue 1 throughout the 2022/23 campaign as Monaco finished sixth.

Sarr surely has no future at Chelsea

In our view, Sarr should focus on finding a new club this summer – Pochettino already has a tough job on his hands squeezing Colwill in, let alone think about the Frenchman too.

Colwill has already issued Pochettino with an ultimatum, as talkSPORT believe the England Under-21 international has demanded guarantees over playing time, or else he will push to join Brighton after the Seagulls bid £40m.

Therefore, the Argentine must find a way to accommodate the 20-year-old in his system, which typically only includes two central defenders, while also keeping the likes of Siva, Fofana, Badiashile and Koulibaly happy.

With the above in mind, we simply cannot see Sarr getting any game time next season with European football not on the schedule – even in the domestic cup competitions.
