‘Very realistic possibility’ Chelsea sign ‘world-class’ player for £90m in the summer

Chelsea may be able to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen for £90m in the summer.

At one point, it had looked like clubs would have to spend well in excess of £100m to sign Victor Osimhen, with TEAMtalk having reported last month that £120m was needed to get the 24-year-old out of Napoli.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport that Osimhen’s new Napoli contract will have a release clause in it that could be as low as £90m and as high as £100m.

Given that Chelsea have spent over £100m twice on two different midfielders, £90m on an elite forward like Osimhen could be great business.

The Nigerian was recently described as a “world-class striker” by AS Monaco’s Folarin Balogun, who was speaking to ESPN.

Victor Osimhen could have £90m release clause

Jacobs says the final figure for Osimhen’s release clause is still being discussed but claimed that it could end up being £90m.

On the Napoli star’s new contract, the journalist said: “There is a release clause and the terms of that release clause at the time of recording are still being discussed, when it kicks in and what the final amount is. But as I’ve reported before, the expectation was always that the Osimhen side would want an out and a release clause.

“So a summer transfer certainly still becomes a very realistic possibility and in the current market, the release clause will not be so extortionate, based on Osimhen’s talent to put off suitors. It’s certainly not particularly low, which would guarantee that there will be a mad race to trigger it. But if you consider most suitors feel like Osimhen is a £90 million to £100 million pound player, that is going to be in or around the release clause number.”

Victor Osimhen worth £90m

In this day and age, £90m is more than a fair price for Osimhen. Again, look at how much Chelsea spent on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, players who are not going to win you games.

A clinical forward like Osimhen, then, is going to have to be valued around the £100m mark.

He scored 26 goals in Serie A last season. That kind of firepower could transform Mauricio Pochettino‘s side.

Until the Argentine can bring in a new striker, he will have to rely on Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. Nkunku made Chelsea’s bench for the first time on Saturday and Frank Leboeuf hopes he makes his first start soon.
