Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has shared his delighted after his club completed the signing of Chelsea youngster Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan earlier today.

Championship club Burnley confirmed on Friday evening they’ve signed the Chelsea defender for the entire 2022/23 campaign.

Maatsen, 20, is an exciting left wing-back that’s already got a strong amount of first-team experience. For example, he was a major success during last season in the Championship on his loan with Coventry City.

There’s no doubt the expectation will be on Burnley to compete for a return to the Premier League after last campaign’s top-flight relegation, so Chelsea’s loanee will be entering a pressured environment.

It definitely feels like another step up for him in his progress.

Clarets boss and Premier League legend Kompany appears very happy to work with Maatsen:

“We’re pleased to add Ian to our team, he’s a talented, energetic and pacy player, who can defend and get forward well. Ian will be a great addition to our team on and off the pitch,” Kompany said.

Maatsen’s made one senior Chelsea appearance so far in his career, but is developing his game very nicely through the use of the loan system.

He’s a left-footed Dutch full-back that’s going to inject energy and speed to the Burnley line-up.

The Blues-owned defender was actually linked with a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge earlier in the transfer window, but his exit to Turf Moor is only on a loan basis.

Let’s hope he’s a step closer to competing with Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell in a year’s time.
