Chelsea are expected to be back in contact with Inter Milan today over the exit of Romelu Lukaku.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Serie A side are prepared to improve the proposal made following negotiations yesterday.

The deal has had potential to be a protracted one, however it appears the Blues are happy for the wantaway striker to move on before sorting out their own business.

While it may not drag on all summer, the Stamford Bridge faithful may feel like it’s already been on the cards for a while, following the Belgian’s claims at the turn of the year that he wanted to return to Inter in the near future.

The comments came just after the 29-year-old had inspired his team to a comeback victory over Aston Villa, with his relationship with supporters deteriorating in the second half of the season.

The man, who was being described as ‘brilliant’ by opponents such as Shane Duffy in his last spell in the league, managed just eight league goals on his return to England

Lukaku further reiterated his desire to return to the San Siro when the season ended, although it seemed the Nerazzurri’s financial situation could make it difficult for them to fulfil his wish.

However, developments in the last few days have claimed the clubs have begun agreeing a loan fee, with Inter making an original proposal yesterday.

Romano says Chelsea turned this down, although it won’t be the end of talks, with them expected to continue today.

He said last night: “Chelsea and Inter will have a new direct contact tomorrow for Romelu Lukaku. First bid for €5m plus €2m add ons turned down, but Inter are prepared to improve their proposal. Chelsea are waiting for Inter’s new bid to decide on Lukaku’s future soon.”

The Blues are best off just getting whatever they can for Lukaku’s services this season and hoping to strike up a permanent deal next summer.

It’s almost pointless considering system changes and personnel additions to help the Belgian shine when he doesn’t really want to himself.

Chelsea’s wait for another successful big-money striker move goes on.
