What Chelsea sources are saying about rumoured interest in Florian Wirtz

Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso coached Florian Wirtz during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz is now being linked with a move to Chelsea, which would see him reunite with his former boss.

It has been claimed that Alonso is pushing Chelsea to sign Wirtz from Liverpool to strengthen the Blues’ attack.

Chelsea dismiss Florian Wirtz speculation

With Wirtz working under Alonso before and being very successful during that period, the Chelsea link is a very easy one to make.

However, it is being dismissed by the club. Chelsea sources have told football.london that there is nothing in the rumours and that they are not interested in signing Wirtz this summer.

Any deal for Wirtz would have been an expensive one. Liverpool paid £116m to sign Wirtz from Leverkusen last year.

The German’s best position is No.10, where Cole Palmer plays. Chelsea would be paying crazy money for someone they probably would have had to shoehorn into their team.

That is not to say that the Blues do not need to sign a new No.10. Palmer needs cover and probably someone to push him, especially after he let his standards slip last season. But Wirtz is unlikely to be that man.

Florian Wirtz’s stats last season

Wirtz underperformed in the Premier League during the 2025/26 campaign. There is no getting away from that.

He is a £100m attacker who only managed to score five goals and provide three assists in 33 top-flight outings.

Liverpool as a whole underperformed, though, and it was just his first season in England. He deserves more time and certainly has enough quality to turn things around.

Anfield even saw that quality at times, just not enough. A move to Chelsea would be quite premature for him and Liverpool.

Alonso may very well be open to working with the Germany international again one day, but that day will have to be in the future.
