Whether Chelsea have option to recall Romelu Lukaku from Roma loan in January

One player who will not be helping Chelsea with their issues up front in January is Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea still own Romelu Lukaku, who is currently on loan at AS Roma.

The striker has been on fire for Jose Mourinho’s side this season and is the kind of forward Mauricio Pochettino could do with right now. However, The Athletic has explained why he will not be returning to Stamford Bridge next month.

According to the outlet, there is no recall clause for Chelsea to trigger, meaning that the Blues would have to get Roma to agree to send him back to them.

Having scored 11 goals for the club this season, though, that is unlikely to happen, while there is nothing to suggest that Chelsea actually want him back.

Should Chelsea have included a recall clause in the Romelu Lukaku deal?

No. Lukaku’s time at Chelsea is clearly finished. He does not want to be at Stamford Bridge and his parent club’s struggles will not change that.

At Roma, on the other hand, the Belgian seems to be really enjoying himself there. Back in September, Mourinho claimed that he was very happy at the Stadio Olimpico (BBC Sport).

You would now expect the Italian club to sign Lukaku permanently, with the Evening Standard claiming that Chelsea are willing to sell him for £37m.

The question is, then, who is going to be the solution to Chelsea’s goalscoring problems? In an ideal world, the club would go out and sign Victor Osimhen, who continues to be linked with a switch to west London.

But landing someone like that is easier said than done. The possibility of Pochettino sticking with Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja until the end of the season, then, is not something that you can rule out. However, that is probably not the outcome Pochettino wants.
