Why David Alaba could solve Chelsea’s left-back problem

Chelsea are in the market for a left-back in January. Marcus Alonso and Emerson are deemed surplus to requirements, and if the Blues are to reach the next level they need a new man on the left side of the defence.

The Mirror has reported that Lampard is now eyeing a £60 million move for Bayern Munich’s David Alaba. The Austrian is considered as one of the best full-backs in the world and would be an impressive coup if Chelsea could pull it off.

The 27-year-old has made 250 Bundesliga appearances for the German club and could be tempted by a new challenge. He has had to provide cover in the central positions this season, something he is not keen on.

After winning an eighth league title with Bayern last season, could it be time for a fresh start for Alaba? Chelsea will certainly be hoping so.

He can get up and down the flanks, providing reliable cover in defence as well as a threat in attack as well. His current contract runs until the summer of 2021 and now could prove to be the perfect time to make a move.

It would be a big upgrade for Chelsea in the left-back position, and Alaba’s style would certainly suit the Premier League. He possesses impressive speed, strength, and stamina, traits that Chelsea’s current options do not necessarily have.

The 72-capped Austrian would not just improve Chelsea either. It would weaken a Bayern side that the Blues have to face in the last-16 of the Champions League in February. This is not a reason in its own right to sign Alaba, but it makes the possibility that much more exciting.
