Thomas Tuchel revealed that he is attempting to retrieve Emerson Palmieri from his loan spell away from Chelsea.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup game against Chesterfield, Tuchel explained the situation regarding the Italy international.

Why do Chelsea want to recall Emerson?

If the German coach possessed the ability of hindsight, he might never have let Emerson join Lyon over the summer.

At the time, it seemed wise to let the 27-year-old leave Stamford Bridge and earn some minutes across the continent.

Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso were clearly ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving him to pick up the scraps in cup games.

However, now Chilwell is out for the campaign, it is Chelsea who are scrambling around to find solutions at left wing-back.

They have reportedly demonstrated interest in Everton’s Lucas Digne and Barcelona defender Sergino Dest.

Tuchel talks up Emerson

Another, cheaper option would be to recall Emerson from his French settlement, although Lyon will probably provide some resistance to such a deal.

“I will not give you any details on that, but in general, I will not hide from the fact we have a long-term injury with Ben Chilwell as our left wing-back who will miss the whole season,” said Tuchel on the club’s transfer business in regards.

“Of course, we know Em, we appreciate him a as player and a person.

“He had such a huge influence, although he didn’t have a lot of minutes last season because he’s a top guy, a top professional and he is still a Chelsea player.

“But, it’s not only what I wish for. We also need to evaluate the situation. But we are looking into it, on this position and Em is one of the options.”

Tuchel a fan of the Lyon man

Tuchel is clearly a big fan of Emerson, having constantly praised him whenever he pulled on a Chelsea shirt last year.

In terms of a player coming in and knowing the German’s system straight away, the European Championship winner would be an ideal fit.

Digne and Dest are relatively untried and untested in the 3-4-2-1 formation that the coach organises his side into.

At this stage of the term, the Champions League holders cannot afford to wait around for individuals to ease their way into new surroundings.

They need quick results and Emerson could be a quick solution.
