Burnley are now working on a deal to sign Ian Maatsen on loan from Chelsea before Friday’s transfer deadline.
That is according to Sacha Tavolieri.
So, what is the latest on Ian Maatsen at Chelsea? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well – according to the Daily Mail’s Transfer Confidential email (sign up link here) – the Dutchman is having doubts about signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
That is despite the fact Maatsen has featured in two of Chelsea’s three Premier League outings so far this season, ahead of Marc Cucurella who has not played a single minute.
While the Netherlands Under-21 international does appear to have a career at Chelsea – Mauricio Pochettino has already called him a player of “enormous potential” – his immediate future could now involve a move to Burnley.

Tavolieri believes Vincent Kompany’s side are trying to bring Maatsen back to Turf Moor on loan for the 2023/24 campaign after he helped the Clarets win the Championship title during his loan spell last term.
The Vlaardingen-born prodigy scored four goals and provided six assists in 39 Championship appearances, earning a place in the Team of the Year at left-back as a result.
Chelsea need to make a decision on Ian Maatsen
As Burnley work on a loan deal for Maatsen, Chelsea have also made Marc Cucurella available for loan – according to The Athletic – with Manchester United interested after Luke Shaw suffered an injury.
Both players represent Pochettino’s backup options behind Ben Chilwell, and while losing one of them is okay, the Argentine cannot afford to offload both.

Therefore, Chelsea need to decide whether to keep Maatsen or Cucurella in west London for the 2023/24 campaign, with only a matter of days to decide.
In our view, Cucurella is more likely to depart, given the fact he has not played a single minute of Premier League football yet this season, whereas Maatsen has made two appearances.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen.
