Spanish news outlet MARCA have been left in shock that Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta was replaced at half-time in last night’s World Cup game.
Spain stumbled over the line of qualifying from the group stages of the competition, despite a 7-0 win to kickstart the tournament.
They ended up losing 2-1 last night. However, they led Japan at the break when Azpilicueta was replaced.
The Blues captain had even got involved with the attacks last night, teeing up former club teammate Alvaro Morata with a sensational cross.
MARCA have claimed he was one of few positives for Spain on a night where they have Kai Havertz to thank for breaking Costa Rican hearts.
They said: “It was one of the best of the first half in Spain. Attendance in Morata’s goal and with more offensive presence than usual.
Azpilicueta impresses Spanish media
“No problems in defense. It was Luis Enrique’s only change to the break. Inexplicable if it wasn’t for some physical problem.”
It’s currently unconfirmed, although not believed that Azpilicueta picked up any form on injury during his showing.
Nevertheless, he has surely now made a case to manager Luis Enrique that he should be considered for a start when the knockout stages roll around.
The 2010 winners have set up a date with the Hakim Ziyech-inspired Morocco.
Azpilicueta’s fine showing is just a continuation of Chelsea players continuing to thrive at this winter international tournament.
Kalidou Koulibaly, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, as well as Ziyech, have all been handed player of the match awards for impressive showings throughout the group stage.
Blues fans will now be hoping that the squad can bring some of this form back to Stamford Bridge after the domestic break is over, with a big effort required to save the club’s season.
