After surviving two penalty shoot-outs, succeeding successive two-hour matches, overcoming the South Americans was just a step too far.
Yet, Modric and Kovacic were awarded for their efforts with a bronze medal, having defeated Morocco in the third-place playoff.
Both of the Croats had a claim for being the competition’s best midfielders, an honour they would happily split between them.
They have achieved so much together, but sadly a golden area is coming to an end.
Modric will hang up his international boots before too long, with the torch likely passed over to his former Real Madrid teammate.
