Olivier Giroud and former Chelsea teammate Mason Mount shared an affectionate moment following the pair’s World Cup quarter-final contest last night.

Giroud and Mount were enemies for 90 minutes as England battled against France for a place in the semi-final.

It was only just over 12 months ago that the two were club partners in crime before the experienced striker signed for AC Milan.

But in Qatar, their friendship went out of the window for an hour and a half.

That rivalry concluded immediately after the final whistle, with France eventually finishing as 2-1 winners.

Didier Deschamps’ men ecstatically celebrated their leap into the semi-final, leaving England’s players left on a heap in the floor.

Mount was one of those who could only look down at the turf in disappointment, having done not quite enough to continue his campaign in the competition.

Gracious in victory, Giroud consoled his old co-worker with an embrace at the full-time whistle.

Chelsea past and present came together to prove that the Blues will always be in their hearts.

But a hug probably won’t be enough to cover the wounds sustained by the Stamford Bridge star.

He was almost the reason England remained in the tournament.

The 23-year-old drew a foul from Theo Hernandez in the area, an illegal move that was eventually punished by the officials.

Harry Kane stepped up for his second penalty of the evening, having already converted past Hugo Lloris.

Kane failed to bag his brace from the spot, as his effort soared over the crossbar.

Giroud’s header with less than 15 minutes remaining turned out to be the difference in the game.
