Chelsea’s youngsters put on a mesmerising display in the convincing 4-0 win over Everton and the future may look bright, but Chelsea should not overlook the soon out-of-contract heroes at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Watching 18 years old Billy Gilmour, Faustino Anjorin and Armando Broja being featured against Everton in the Premier League, it would be impossible to dismiss Frank Lampard’s project to rejuvenate Chelsea squad.
But Lampard stressed how instrumental the experienced players is for Chelsea.
Lampard told Mirror: “The younger players have injected energy to the club and the fans. Look at the reaction to Gilmour.
“But also look at the experienced players: Pedro running from virtually inside his own half for the second goal, or Willian today all over the pitch. As a group, everyone showed that energy.”
Running out of contracts
Their respective deals at Chelsea will expire in June and there have been no reports of extension for Pedro and Giroud. Meanwhile, Willian has reportedly rejected the club’s offer.
Although Chelsea may want to reallocate the fund to build a new squad, losing three key figures in the dressing room at the same time is always a risky move.
Pedro and Willian showed they still offer tenacity and pace down the wings while Giroud is a great target man who can be crucial in the buildup with his headers and linkup play.
It is now up to the Chelsea boards to make the decisions. Will they keep one or two of these influential veterans or go out for fresh faces in the summer but risk the dressing room.
