If reports are true, Chelsea are now at risk of a bigger transfer disaster than selling Mason Mount – opinion

It feels like most of Chelsea’s transfer business so far this summer has been well received by supporters, but we fear there’s now a risk of really frustrating most of the Blues fanbase.

Mason Mount’s sale to Manchester United is one that many feel falls into the category of mistake.

However, in our view, Chelsea will be making an even bigger transfer disaster if Levi Colwill follows him out of the Stamford Bridge exit doors this summer.

Chelsea fans will try to quickly move on from Mount, who’s now a Man United player that plays his football at Old Trafford.

Yes, we feel a lot more could have been done prior to him leaving, especially in early contract talks. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder did eventually decide to go in a £55million transfer (Sky Sports), though.

We mark the Mount saga down as one the Chelsea ownership seriously need to learn from.

Those around Stamford Bridge want to see the club’s very best academy graduates, such as Mount, be the bedrock of the first team. Therefore, we’re growing concerned to hear rumours regarding the future of Blues youngster Colwill.

If reports are true, which is that Liverpool are confident of signing Colwill, Chelsea need to get their act together sharpish!

The 20-year-old defender is a gem from Cobham that performed superbly on loan at Brighton last year, so now is the time to bring him into the senior fold at the Bridge. Our message is we simply can’t lose him!

90min has claimed on Wednesday that Liverpool are preparing to make an offer for Colwill, who they believe they can tempt to Anfield this summer.

We think losing Colwill in this window would be an even bigger crime than Mount going.

In our view, the left-footed centre-back is on an upwards trajectory that leads towards him becoming one of the best defenders around. It’s no coincidence he’s already trained with the England senior squad and was integral in the Young Lions winning the Under-21s European Championship this summer.

If we do lose the centre-half, we’re going to have to watch him fulfil this crazy potential at a Premier League rival.

The Daily Mail has reported that Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino will hold face-to-face talks with Colwill this week. Hopefully, the pair have a friendly chat that ends in the player feeling confident he’s got a future at the club.
