Reports have claimed that Chelsea players have endured a gruelling first week under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.

According to the Evening Standard, an anonymous source from the club has claimed the players were worked harder in that one week than they were in the entire pre-season campaign last season.

It has been widely known in the game that Pochettino is a coach who is keen on having a fit side, and this is something he certainly hasn’t inherited at Chelsea yet.

The injury record of the club last season suggested that they were nowhere near where they needed to be, and had a massive effect on them.

You only need to look at the amount of changes Graham Potter was forced to make to his side throughout the season to notice just how tough things would have been.

It does look as if this is being addressed, and their shortcomings may actually assist them going into next season.

No European football will mean that the Blues will only be playing one game a week for the majority of the campaign. This should allow a number of players who endured a tough time last season a better chance of things.

One of these players is Reece James, who struggled to put together a run of time in the team due to injuries that also kept him out of the World Cup over the winter.

It came out today that his father, Nigel James, has already claimed his son wants to stay at Chelsea, with him also having ambitions to become the future captain of the club.

That honour is currently up for grabs too, after Cesar Azpilicueta left the club after more than a decade here.
