'Has done very well': Tuchel hails returning loanee for his display vs Tottenham last night

Thomas Tuchel praised the performance of Chelsea youngster Trevoh Chalobah after he started against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Tuchel was asked whether Chalobah had played his way into the first-team squad this season.

The 22-year-old has been heavily involved in all of his side’s last three friendly fixtures.

He began in the back three away to Arsenal and again at home to Tottenham last night.

His exhibition at the Emirates and Stamford Bridge earned plenty of compliments from Chelsea fans on social media.

A midfielder by trade, Tuchel decided to deploy Chalobah in defence, with the outcomes generally extremely positive.

Tuchel acknowledged this, but still offered some kind words to the former Lorient loanee.

“We know him from Lorient and Chalo has done very well in pre-season,” said Chelsea’s manager.

“We wanted to continue in the back three, so there was space in the back until (Kurt) Zouma and Toni (Rudiger) arrived.

“Then there was one space left but then Andreas Christensen, Reece (James) and Azpi (Cesar Azpilicueta) are back, then there is a huge competition for him.

“He’s done very well in both games and within his potential and limits that was nice to see. He played a good match, I agree.”

Thiago Silva didn’t even get a mention, which just shows Chelsea’s strength in depth at the back.

Which will be expanded even further if the Blues manage to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla.

Chalobah has done all he can do for now to try and squeeze into the senior set-up for 2021/22.

Although another loan move might not be the ideal outcome, it’s a scenario he will probably have to consider.
