'I'm surprised': Thomas Tuchel left shocked by what he's heard 26-year-old Chelsea player say on pre-season tour

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been left shocked by Timo Werner’s recent comments about his position.

Werner, 26, dropped a hint recently in an interview that his future may lie away from Stamford Bridge.

The Blues attacker, who missed the latest pre-season game with a hamstring problem, admitted his frustration over a lack of game time.

“It is clear I want to play more and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup… I could be happy everywhere,” Werner said.

He scored 11 goals in 37 games across all competitions last season for Chelsea, but you never felt like he was a nailed-on starter in the XI. His Blues career has been a rollercoaster ride so far with plenty of criticism along the way, too.

Tuchel shocked by Werner’s comments

Blues boss Tuchel has explained his surprise after hearing what his attacker said.

“I’m surprised, I would be very happy as a young guy having a contract at Chelsea Football Club. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet,” Tuchel said about Werner.

It was reported back in May that the Germany international is one of several Chelsea players open to possibly leaving West London, so it’ll be interesting to see if any new speculation surfaces in light of these comments.

Obviously, Werner’s not in Tuchel’s good books as it stands.

Blues attack

If Chelsea don’t sign any more attackers in this window, you feel it’s imperative that 26-year-old Werner stays.

Despite his erratic finishing, the rapid forward is someone that does bring plenty of other qualities to the line-up and can cover different positions.

It looks like the No.9 position is genuinely up for grabs going into the new campaign, which is why his comments have come at a bad time.
