Journalist Rob Pratley has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino wants defender Levi Colwill to be a crucial part of his Chelsea side if he gets the manager’s job.

The Argentine has emerged in recent days as the favourite to take the job on a permanent basis starting from next season.

This comes after Julian Nagelsmann ruled himself out of the running for the job, as he felt that the recruitment process was seeing him risk losing out on the role.

With a big squad overhaul set to take place starting from this summer, it is imperative that a new coach comes in as soon as possible to get their ideas across before any crucial player is sold.

Pratley has claimed that Pochettino has a plan for Colwill to be an integral part of his side, as well as January signing Mykhailo Mudryk.

He said: “I understand 2 of the main points Pochettino has impressed the club on is his roadmap for Levi Colwill and Mykhailo Mudryk.

“The former is viewed as an integral core of the defence, whilst Pochettino has expressed his belief the latter can become an extremely effective goalscorer.”

Colwill has been extremely impressive since making the loan move to Brighton earlier this season, and he will feel unlucky that he didn’t start in the FA Cup semi-final defeat yesterday.

His performances have not gone unnoticed though. Gareth Southgate has reportedly been considering handing him his first England call-up.

Chelsea are reportedly keen to keep hold of the 20-year-old next season, when they look to make him a first team member in a currently-busy defensive selection.

However, the potential backing of Pochettino could see him given the confidence that a pathway to the top exists at Stamford Bridge.
