Mauricio Pochettino has shared his delight at working alongside fellow countryman Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea.
Speaking on Friday afternoon in his first press conference since becoming Chelsea’s head coach, Mauricio Pochettino has delivered some very interesting comments for our supporters to go through.
In particular, he may have just given a hint towards one of his preferred players in the current squad.
Enzo Fernandez, who joined Chelsea midway through last season, is one of the real positives at Stamford Bridge right now.
The 22-year-old is already a World Cup winner after starring in Argentina’s success last winter.
We suspect he can be the future of the Blues midfield for a long time, too.
When asked about working alongside Fernandez, Pochettino said (Chelsea’s YouTube channel): “It is a pleasure, and I feel very proud of him and our national team and the players that gave the third World Cup to Argentina.
“I’m so excited. I hope that we can win together many trophies here.”
Fernandez was a nailed-on starter after joining Chelsea in the New Year, something we don’t picture changing during the Pochettino reign.
Let’s hope the all-action midfielder can get off to a quick start next season.
The Daily Mail has claimed that Conor Gallagher is currently the most likely candidate to start alongside Fernandez in the Chelsea midfield next season.
Regardless, every fan will expect to see Fernandez in the starting line-up for the club’s opening Premier League fixture against Liverpool.
In our view, Fernandez is too good on the ball to simply sit at the base of midfield breaking up play.
We enjoy watching the South American enforcer get stuck into tackles and dictating possession from deep, but we think there’s a lot to be admired about his attacking qualities as well.
If Pochettino deploys his preferred system of 4-2-3-1, we can imagine Fernandez contributing offensively as a box-to-box central mifielder.
