Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel “wants” on-loan defender Emerson Palmieri back in the squad amid Ben Chilwell’s long-term injury, and the club is prepared to offer compensation to Lyon, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Tuchel was very open about his admiration for Emerson as “a player and a person” when he spoke about the possibility of recalling the loanee from his season-long loan at Lyon.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, as Romano and other previous reports suggested, the French club has already turned down their initial approach to recall the 27-year-old.
Tuchel’s admission indicated that Chelsea have not given up, though, and Romano claims the club is still pushing to reach an agreement with Lyon.
Chelsea are even reportedly willing to offer compensation to Lyon.
The Italian transfer expert also mentioned that Everton defender Lucas Digne, who has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, is looking “very unlikely” to join Chelsea.
While Everton are open to Digne’s exit, Romano claims they are looking to offload him permanently in January.
As it stands, Marcos Alonso is the only natural left-back in Tuchel’s squad, with Callum Hudson-Odoi being a more attacking wing-back option.
The Blues are also dealing with another crisis, albeit short-term, on the opposite side of the pitch due to Reece James’ injury absence.
Cesar Azpilicueta remains the obvious replacement, but Tuchel has also deployed Christian Pulisic in this position on several occasions.
