Reports have claimed that Graham Potter concluded that his Chelsea players were ultimately doing what they wanted in their loss to Aston Villa.

According to the Mail Online, backroom staff were left stunned at seeing their players seemingly refuse to carry out instructions that had been worked on throughout the week.

The Blues had a chance to close in on the European places when they welcomed Unai Emery’s side on Saturday, boasting an unbeaten streak of three games in the league up to this day.

However, they laboured to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, bringing an end to Potter’s time at the helm.

Despite plenty of backing from Todd Boehly, seeing his side drop into the bottom half of the Premier League was enough for the American to make the decision.

Potter let down by Chelsea players

While the former Brighton man made plenty of mistakes in his short time at the club, he will feel let down by what his players did at the weekend.

It is the players who always reign supreme in these situations though, and now recruitment is underway to find a new manager to take over in West London.

Julian Nagelsmann has been linked strongly with a move to Stamford Bridge, perhaps predictably after he was recently sacked himself by European giants Bayern Munich.

However, it has been claimed that people close to him expect the German to want to wait until the end of this season before taking his next job.

This could leave the door open to other candidates to stake their claim. Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly set to be interviewed for the role after just missing out when Thomas Tuchel was sacked earlier this season.
