‘See it every day in training’: Ben Chilwell waxes lyrical about Chelsea man’s performance in win v Brentford

Ben Chilwell waxed lyrical about Chelsea teammate Edouard Mendy after his heroics against Brentford.

Chilwell and Mendy were the two heroes on Saturday evening during a 1-0 away win for the Blues against rivals Brentford.

First of all, Chilwell scored the only goal of the contest shortly before half time with an emphatic half-volley. It means the left wing-back now has three goals in his last three appearances for club and country.

Afterwards, it was up to Chelsea’s defensive resilience in the second period to ensure another three points in the Premier League. Thomas Tuchel’s side are back on top of the division table after a win.

Mendy came up with some memorable saves late on, including one from a point blank distance from Brentford defender Pontus Jansson.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper was not to be denied his clean sheet with a resilient performance that highlights what an incredible 12 months he’s had at Stamford Bridge. He’s now up to 30 clean sheets in 54 club appearances for Chelsea.

Chilwell credited the Blues number one in his post-match comments:

“I think we’ve got Edu to thank,” Chilwell said.

“The last 20/30 minutes he was superb. He’s amazing. We see it every day in training, but he’s getting the credit he deserves in these sorts of games where he’s makes big save and gets us the three points in the end.”

Ben Chilwell great example to Chelsea squad

Of course, Chilwell would have been majorly disappointed to spend a lot of the early weeks of the season in the stands.

Marcos Alonso was doing a superb job in the starting XI at the beginning of this campaign, with Chilwell made to be patient on the bench.

His attitude has been immense though because he’s seized the opportunity when gifted by Tuchel.

Running out of superlatives for Mendy

It’s hard to rave about Mendy anymore.

Jody Morris has hailed his performance tonight, along with a special message from Antonio Rudiger.

The fact that a new-look back-three this evening for Chelsea had such a commanding presence behind them must have been a massive confidence.

Mendy is performing like one of Europe’s very best right now, so Chelsea can dream of more silverware when they have him in this form.
