Tuchel says reliable Chelsea player is finally back in ‘good shape’ after early struggles

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel believes Mason Mount has now rediscovered his best form as he expects more assists and goals from the versatile midfielder.

The 22-year-old has now had more goals contributions than any other Chelsea player in the Premier League this season with six goals and four assists, despite having just nine league starts.

It took him quite a while to finally get on the scoresheet, though. He had not scored for over two months before ending the goal drought in style with a hat-trick against Norwich City in October.

Tuchel argued that it is perfectly normal for a young player to endure rough patches during the season.

“We rely on him because he plays in an offensive position,” the German told Chelsea’s official website.

“He needs to be decisive and assist and score, because he has the technique, the ability, and the movement to do so.

“It’s about timing, acceleration, knowing where and when to arrive in the box.

‘It’s about connections between Reece and him most of the time, depending on which side he plays. We cannot be surprised that sometimes in careers of young players they have difficult moments.

“That’s why they are young players, and why their careers are at the beginning and not the end.

“The thing is to take care of him, guide him through these moments, to push him and trust him with what we do.

“Players always want to play, now he is back in a good shape and in full confidence, and with a bit of luck, he will be the guy he can be.”

Mount’s goalscoring form has come at the right time as several other Chelsea attackers are struggling at the moment.

Tuchel is also clearly very confident of the England international’s ability.

Although, Chelsea will need the other attackers, especially Romelu Lukaku as a main striker, to step up, considering their issues in defence.
