Frank Lampard has now had his say on Mason Mount’s decision to leave Chelsea for Manchester United.

He told Steven Bartlett’s ‘Diary of a CEO podcast’ that he believes the England international is going to be fantastic for his new side.

After years of looking as if he was set to become the poster boy at Stamford Bridge, Mount has this summer forced his way up to Old Trafford.

It is a move that has left a bad taste in the mouth of some supporters, who were backing him through his toughest times.

Yesterday saw him make his debut for his new club in pre-season against Leeds, where he featured in a number eight role.

Lampard has stated that he wished the England international had remained at Chelsea, although backs him for success.

Lampard reacts to Mount move

He said: “He’s a great signing for you [Manchester United]. It’s a complicated one. In the end, he’s got a year left on his contract. What I’ll say about Mason is, all the things I’ve said about modern players and the way the game has changed, he is a throwback to the attitude and the commitment.

“That was the beauty of working with Mason, he gave you so much in terms of effort every day. He got it. Any great player has to have that confidence and that desire about them.

“In terms of what he’ll bring to Manchester United, it won’t just be what Mason brings on the pitch, but levels around him are gonna go up. I’ve seen some alternative reaction to that. Mason Mount is going to be a fantastic player there, in my opinion.

“I think he would have envisioned that he would stay at Chelsea for a lot of his career. But circumstances – his contract situation – players do move and I think it’s a good challenge. I would have liked to see him stay at Chelsea.”

It will be interesting to see the reaction the 24-year-old gets when he makes his long-awaited return to West London later this season.
