£50m Chelsea player needs to have the game of his life tomorrow as Enzo Maresca hints at opportunity

Since arriving at Chelsea, Enzo Maresca has been pretty ruthless. You only have to look at how he has dealt with Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell to know that.

Currently, Raheem Sterling is not even at the club, with the winger joining Arsenal on loan after being exiled from Chelsea‘s first-team squad.

Ben Chilwell also faced the same treatment, with Enzo Maresca not playing around.

For as ruthless as the 44-year-old has been, though, Chilwell is training with the main group again and could even get an opportunity against Barrow in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Ben Chilwell could play against Barrow

Initially, Maresca had warned Chilwell that he would not get minutes if he remained at Chelsea.

However, with the transfer window now closed, the Italian has changed his tune a little bit.

“They [the likes of Chilwell, Chukwuemeka, George and Acheampong] are going to be the ones who will be in the squad [vs Barrow],” Maresca told reporters in his pre-match press conference when discussing who will be selected for Tuesday’s game.

“Some we will see if they start, but if not they will all be on the bench and hopefully we can give them some [minutes].”

It means Marc Cucurella is likely to get a rest before Chelsea take on his former club Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

Ben Chilwell has to perform in Barrow clash

For many Chelsea supporters, a third-round tie in the Carabao Cup against Barrow will not be big.

Yet for Chilwell, it is massive. The left-back is in a fight to save his Chelsea career. Maresca clearly has his doubts about him, so he really cannot afford to put in a poor display against a League 2 side.

If the above happens, Chilwell will never win over his manager. It is as simple as that. It already looks like a difficult challenge for the £50m England international, who is behind both Cucurella and Renato Veiga in the pecking order.

If Chilwell does get an opportunity against Stephen Clemence’s men, then he needs to put in one of his best ever performances in a Chelsea shirt. Fail to do that, and Chilwell could end up at Ipswich Town, who are one club who are said to be interested in him, or another Premier League team lower in the table.
