Chelsea can now forget about £47m winger after Jadon Sancho’s impact this season

Chelsea signed Jadon Sancho from Manchester United on deadline day, and the decision to do so is paying off.

Jadon Sancho has transformed Chelsea‘s left flank this season, often posing a threat when he gets on the ball.

In the four Premier League games that the winger has played for Chelsea, he has come up with three assists.

Tony Cascarino thought Sancho was too conservative against Nottingham Forest, but Chelsea supporters will not have too many complaints about him overall. With Sancho now at the club, Chelsea can move on from Nico Williams, if they have not already.

Chelsea were interested in Nico Williams

Before Chelsea signed Sancho from their Premier League rivals United, they had an interest in Williams.

It was claimed that Chelsea wanted to bring in Williams as they looked to strengthen out wide. According to The Athletic, he has a £47m release clause in his contract.

In the end, Williams opted to stay at Athletic Bilbao and has stated that he is happy there.

“The fans are very happy that I’m staying here and I’m very happy to be here,” the 22-year-old told El Mundo in a recent interview. “Bilbao is my home, I want to continue enjoying it and the truth is that I’m very happy.”

Chelsea missing out on Nico Williams may have been a blessing in disguise

Not being able to sign Williams, Chelsea had to turn to other wide men, Sancho and Pedro Neto.

Sancho, who is only two years older than Williams, will only cost around half of the Spain international’s release clause if he joins Chelsea permanently next summer.

That will happen if the Blues finish 14th or higher in the Premier League table this season, which you would expect to happen.

Ultimately, from what he has shown in a blue shirt so far, £25m for Sancho could be an absolute bargain. If the England international maintains the form that he is in and keeps on assisting Chelsea’s other attackers, then looking back, missing out on Williams could prove to be a good thing.

As for the player, former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent thinks Sancho is really happy at Chelsea.
