Chelsea look as if they are going to be working hard on strengthening the attack when the summer transfer window opens at the end of this season.
The Blues decided not to bring in any new forwards during the January. Instead, their main piece of business involved recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan away at Crystal Palace.
Chelsea were linked with a number of names to bolster their options in attack during January, with Enzo Maresca wanting to sign Alejandro Garnacho.
The Blues decided instead to look towards a future where Estevao Willian will be part of their first team. The Brazil international will join up with the squad when his move becomes official at the end of the season.
Chelsea have to make signing Ademola Lookman their priority
Instead, it is perhaps more realistic to suggest that Chelsea will target opportunistic signings out wide, and one may be about to come up in the form of Ademola Lookman.
The Blues have been linked with the Nigerian international in the past, and were notably keen on bringing him in after Chelsea missed out on signing Michael Olise.
Chelsea were willing to offer £50m for Lookman last summer, however could find that price has dropped after what has recently happened at his current club, Atalanta.
The 27-year-old missed a penalty in their Champions League exit to Club Brugge, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini not best pleased with him as a result.
Just 24 hours later, Fabrizio Romano confirmed the plan was for the winger to leave his club in the summer, opening up a situation Chelsea cannot turn down.
He said: “Understand plan remains for Ademola Lookman to LEAVE Atalanta this summer. Atalanta will try to clarify the situation with Gasperini in the next 24h after strong quotes… but won’t change future plans. It was already planned last summer, transfer to happen this year.”
The change in opinion from his manager has been vast. Just months ago, Gasperini described Lookman as ‘one of the best’ in the world to Daily Post Nigeria.
Ademola Lookman furious with Atalanta
The Europa League-winning manager’s comments have not gone down well with Lookman, who stated how hurt he was at being singled out for their defeat.
Chelsea have a number of positions they need to address at the end of the season. A new striker and goalkeeper will be top of their list of priorities.
However, the opportunity to pounce on a wantaway Lookman is too good to miss, and being 27 he can bring the experience at the top level they are desperately missing right now.
