Chelsea have to sign £20m Premier League star if they fail to land Karim Benzema after recent developments

With the transfer deadline fast-approaching, Chelsea are now starting to be heavily linked with a few strikers.

One includes Al-Ittihad’s Karim Benzema, whose representative has been contacted by Chelsea, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

However, if the Blues cannot land the Frenchman for whatever reason, there could be a decent alternative closer to home: Callum Wilson.

Chelsea should consider signing Callum Wilson

According to the Evening Standard, Newcastle United need to raise money in order to stay in line with Premier League profit and sustainability rules and Wilson is a candidate to be sold.

The outlet claims that the striker’s availability has alerted Chelsea, as well as their Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

It is really no surprise that there is Premier League interest in the 31-year-old, as he has proven that he can do it in this division.

Last season, for example, Wilson scored 18 goals in 31 top-flight appearances to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. The Tyneside club bought him from Bournemouth for £20m (BBC Sport) back in 2020.

Callum Wilson a good short-term fix for Chelsea

No one is suggesting that Wilson is going to be the answer to all of Chelsea’s problems.

However, the England international’s track record shows that he could come in now and make a big impact in Mauricio Pochettino‘s starting XI before maybe taking up a lesser role next season after the Blues buy a marquee centre-forward.

Nicolas Jackson is away and Armando Broja could depart Stamford Bridge before the end of the month, so at least considering a move for Wilson would be wise.

The main worry with the former Bournemouth man is his injury record, but he ticks so many other boxes that the gamble — if Pochettino and the club decide that he is one — looks worth it.
