Chelsea really dodged a bullet not signing £35m player who was desperate to join them

It has been all change as far as the playing staff goes at Chelsea in the last few transfer windows.

Todd Boehly has accused Behdad Eghbali over being obsessed with player trading, and the turnover that has been seen would make this believable.

There have certainly been some top players come through the door at Stamford Bridge though. The signing of Cole Palmer has completely revolutionised the club in the last 12 months.

The first window under the new ownership was one that has not been looked on fondly since, with only Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana still really playing a part from those who were signed.

On deadline day, the Blues were reportedly close to adding Edson Alvarez to their ranks, with him since completing a £35m move to West Ham.

Chelsea dodged a bullet not signing Edson Alvarez

The Mexican didn’t make an impression at all when the two sides met at the London Stadium last weekend, and was completely outpaced by Nicolas Jackson for the first goal.

Following that display, he couldn’t seem to do anything right last night in the Carabao Cup. He was sent off in their eventual 5-1 defeat to Liverpool.

Alvarez seemed to be absolutely desperate to join to Chelsea when he was linked. He seemed to go on strike in the Netherlands as he tried to push through a late move.

Chelsea’s midfield looking strong

Chelsea’s current starting midfield is in a really good place right now. They smashed their transfer record in successive windows to bring in Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Romeo Lavia is also closing in on a return from injury, with him impressing greatly in his first start for the club earlier this season.

It will never be known if any of these signings would be passed on if they had completed a deal for Alvarez in 2022, however many will be feeling pretty glad that this situation didn’t arise.
