Chelsea should look to sign ‘incredible’ player to help sort out their defensive woes

The main weakness of the Chelsea side under Enzo Maresca was clear to see during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

The Blues shipped a heap of goals in their five friendlies, keeping one clean sheet in their only win over Club America.

Maresca utilised pretty much all of the options available to him, and experimented with some players too. Ben Chilwell even featured as a makeshift centre-back during his limited minutes over the summer.

No central defenders really made a real statement that they should start the opening game of the Premier League season against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

It looks as if a new addition who can bring some experience to their ranks is required, and the perfect option is available for absolutely zero transfer fee.

Chelsea should sign Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels is currently a free agent after ending his tenure at Borussia Dortmund off the back of their Champions League final appearance.

That campaign proved he was more than good enough to still feature at the highest level, despite the fact he is 35 years of age.

His former manager, Edin Terzic, described him as ‘incredible’ after a game against AC Milan last season, as he continued to lead his club towards the end of his career.

Chelsea only need to look at one of their best defenders of the last decade to see that age should not stop them making a deal for the German.

Chelsea missing Thiago Silva

The Blues have really missed Thiago Silva since he left the club for free this summer, with him surprising many with just how good he was in the twilight of his career.

His experience helped bring the best out of the players around him too, and his departure saw them lose one of their biggest leaders from the club.

There is plenty expected for both the present and the future in the likes of Levi Colwill, with him earmarked as a future Chelsea captain too.

However, a stop gap figure is seriously needed at the back, and Hummels provides the perfect option to do just that without paying a premium.
