Enzo Maresca may have just proven ‘fast’ Chelsea player will start Premier League opener vs Man City

While the result will not be what they were looking for, there were no doubt a number of positives Enzo Maresca can take from their first pre-season friendly.

Goals from Christopher Nkunku and Lesley Ugochukwu will have no doubt given them confidence going into the rest of the tour.

The 2-2 draw against Wrexham saw near enough the whole travelling squad get an opportunity to impress Maresca.

This was also the case for youngsters too. Marc Guiu left a good impression on supporters after making his first appearance for the club of any capacity.

Another player who was on display for the first time in a Chelsea shirt was Tosin Adarabioyo, who started in a strong opening back four.

Tosin Adarabioyo makes Chelsea debut

He played alongside Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Reece James, with them not conceding while the former Fulham man was on the pitch.

While that back four will definitely not start the Premier League season against Manchester City due to James’ suspension, it was certainly an indicator of who Maresca sees as his best set of defenders so far.

Adarabioyo could be in line to start vs Man City

Adarabioyo has impressed with his leadership skills in particular since joining the club, and starting him already is proof he is really in contention to start against the Champions next month.

Pep Guardiola, who will be taking on the Blues at Stamford Bridge on the opening day, has previously described him as ‘fast’ and ‘strong’.

He will be likely under pressure from Wesley Fofana for his place in the side, who supporters were delighted to see back in action after his serious knee injury.

One player who is almost certain not to feature is Trevoh Chalobah, after he was left off the touring squad for this summer.

The club are looking to sell the Englishman this summer, and feel this is the best course of action in order to find him a suitor ahead of next season.

The rest of pre-season will be a great indicator to see if Adarabioyo will be named in that starting squad.
