Enzo Maresca must not repeat huge mistake made in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Man City

Enzo Maresca made a huge mistake as Chelsea lost 2-0 to Manchester City on Sunday. The Chelsea Chronicles explains why it must not happen again.

The Blues went into the game as underdogs but Pep Guardiola’s side were without Rodri and Phil Foden, providing optimism of a positive result.

However, Erling Haaland’s 18th-minute goal soon put to bed the idea that it was a good time to play against the reigning champions.

Chelsea were second-best for much of the encounter, though they did have a few decent chances to level the scoring.

That being said, all hope was lost when former player Mateo Kovacic scored in the final 10 minutes to give his side a comfortable advantage.

The Chelsea Chronicle details Maresca’s huge mistake that makes him partly to blame for the defeat.

Enzo Maresca must drop Robert Sanchez after Man City defeat

Enzo Maresca must take responsibility for Robert Sanchez’s disappointing performance against Man City.

The Italian admitted to watching countless hours of footage from last season in his preparations for the new campaign.

That means he would have seen Sanchez struggle repeatedly before losing his place in the starting lineup to Djordje Petrovic.

Plus, having watched the Spaniard closely in pre-season, Maresca sanctioned the £20.7 million signing of Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.

So, why didn’t Jorgensen start against Man City?

Of course, the 22-year-old may take time to adjust to the Premier League, but that will only be made possible through playing games.

And, even then, it still may not work out for him. But, at least he has the potential to succeed, whereas we know Sanchez is not good enough to start at Stamford Bridge.

The good news for Maresca is that Chelsea are only one game into a long season. He can drop Sanchez for Jorgensen for the UEFA Conference League game on Thursday and his mistake will be forgotten.

Should he keep faith in Sanchez, however, questions over his judgement will need to be asked.
