Enzo Maresca was right that Chelsea player is stepping up as a leader, his latest comments prove it

Even though it’s an incredibly young dressing room at Chelsea right now, there are some senior figures and potential leaders beginning to come to the fore.

It’s no secret that the Chelsea squad is extremely youthful because the club’s transfer policy has been centred around recruiting rising stars for the future.

Blues co-owner Todd Boehly wants a mixture of youth and experience to combine for the perfect squad. At the moment, we would argue Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca doesn’t possess that, which is perhaps why his team suffered dips in form in the 2024/25 season.

Enzo Maresca said Levi Colwill was growing into a leader at the start of 2025

Back in January 2025, Chelsea manager Maresca did single out Levi Colwill for some special praise. In particular, he said that the Blues centre-back was developing and growing into a leader.

Maresca noticed Colwill improving as a leader during the course of the 2024/25 season. The Chelsea boss said: “I can see the leader day by day, since we started in pre-season, something that he can improve in terms of leadership. He is improving a lot. Levi, even if he is not wearing the armband, he is one of the captains and in the future, he could be a captain of this club.”

Colwill has been a fan favourite since breaking into the first team because he’s a product of the Chelsea academy. We agree that the 22-year-old defender is beginning to emerge as a leader within the group.

Now the England international has played 73 senior games for Chelsea, he’s actually one of the more experienced individuals at the club.

Reports claimed that Colwill would love to captain Chelsea further down the line because he simply loves the club.

At the moment, Reece James wears the captain’s armband at Stamford Bridge. We wouldn’t be against Colwill becoming the skipper when he’s not on the pitch, though.

Levi Colwill’s comments this week prove he’s leadership material

Colwill has definitely proven Maresca was on the right lines about him becoming a leader by making some brilliant comments this week.

Colwill recently said via BBC Sport: “We all know how big this club is and how the culture of the club has always been to win. We’re just trying to reinforce that to the young boys, to the boys coming in, that this club is for winners only. That’s what we all need to do and strive towards.”

If you look at the way Colwill talks about Chelsea, it screams captain material. Fans will love to hear he’s drilling a winning mentality into teammates younger than him, too.

Jason Cundy spotted Colwill develop into a leader across the last year, so we’re not the only ones noticing it.

If the ball-playing centre-half can fulfil his potential, he can be a star man in Chelsea’s defence for the next decade because he ticks every box.
