There was a surprise omission from Chelsea’s starting line-up for their game against Sheffield United yesterday.
Mauricio Pochettino decided to leave Enzo Fernandez out of the team for Chelsea‘s 2-0 win, the first time the midfielder was left on the bench in the Premier League this season.
Pochettino suggested that it was because his other midfielders were better fits for this specific game, but the 22-year-old’s form has not been great lately. You can argue that he actually deserved to be dropped because of his recent performances.
Whatever the case, by not starting Fernandez, the Chelsea boss has given Todd Boehly and the club another reason to have doubts about him. The Blues are in mid-table, while Pochettino is not getting the best out of a player who cost Boehly and Co over £100m.

Enzo Fernandez exclusion shows Mauricio Pochettino is not ticking the boxes right now
Pochettino would have been expected to have Chelsea challenging for Champions League qualification this season. Under Graham Potter’s successor, they have just not done that.
Having invested so much money in the likes of Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, the club’s owners also would have wanted to see the man in the dugout getting everything out of them.
However, at present, Pochettino has failed to do that, especially with Fernandez.
Chelsea may have won yesterday, but if they start losing games again and without Fernandez in the side, you can easily see Boehly and the rest of the Chelsea board losing patience with Pochettino.
Mauricio Pochettino not completely to blame
It would be wrong to blame Pochettino, though, for everything. Chelsea have obviously had so many injuries this season and the players themselves, such as Fernandez, also need to take some responsibility.
The Argentina international needs to up his game, especially now after being benched last time out.
The buck stops with the manager, however, and if Pochettino does not get the team and Fernandez to improve, then he could soon find himself in serious trouble.
