‘Special’ Chelsea player really needs a big performance in Carabao Cup vs Newcastle

There are likely to be plenty of changes made to the Chelsea side who take on Newcastle again in the Carabao Cup this week.

The Blues made hard work of Eddie Howe’s side at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, however still walked away with all three points in the 2-1 win.

Enzo Maresca made a number of changes to his Premier League side for the game, with Wesley Fofana returning after his suspension.

The manager believes the experiment of Reece James at left-back worked well, with him starting behind Pedro Neto who was finally rewarded with a start.

The Portugal international replaced Jadon Sancho, and made the most of his time on the pitch with a brilliant assist for Nicolas Jackson’s opener.

The Manchester United loanee has held down the left-wing spot for the majority of the season so far, impressing in the process.

Maresca described Sancho as a ‘special’ player, and has made it clear he is delighted with the addition of him on deadline day.

The winger will likely be back in the starting side tomorrow night for the Carabao Cup game, and needs a big performance to prove that he should be a starter again.

It was claimed that Neto did more than Sancho against Liverpool after replacing him at half-time, although it feels as if both players can bring something different depending on the opposition.

The Portuguese star’s pace was on full display at the weekend, and was a real asset to Chelsea both going forwards and backwards.

Sancho excels far more in games where he is needed to break down a stubborn opposition, and after how open their opponents were at the weekend they may be looking to address that tomorrow night.

The Manchester United loanee will be unable to face his former side at the weekend in their first game since Erik ten Hag’s sacking, so needs a strong performance this week to keep his name firmly near the top of the list of options.
